How Do I Dress My Family For Our Session?
What to Wear? Where to Start?
One of the most dreaded parts of family pictures is the coordination of outfits and deciding who will wear what. Some families don't even know where to start, including what style of session they want. Indoor, outdoor, a park with trees, downtown with skyscrapers? That is why I'm here right now creating this, and why I think you may have landed here as well. This is a starting point, a guide even, to get you along your way from endless hours of back and forth picking colors, textures, and shoes out. This not only helps break down the different style of shoots out there, but gives examples that can help you decide which direction to go with your own family. After all, each family is different. Be confident in your families authentic style, and you will look confident in your portraits.
Lifestyle- Dressing relaxed with casual tones and colors.
These are for families who want images in the moment. Not "Posed", typically parents with younger kids will go this route with a simple background or location. Wearing simple outfits and colors will showcase the family itself, instead of their clothing. Some basic examples to wear for this style is jeans, white and cream shirts or t-shirt dresses for women, a subtle t-shirt for men. Organic colors and textures for kids like cotton overalls or subtle patterned dresses.
Nature- Trees and Fields
These are very popular for family sessions that may like earthy tones for their style and classic "Portraits". I always reccomend families wear colors that match the seasons. In the Fall- Browns, creams, deep Burgundy or Navy. In the Spring- Lighter colors and styles including green, denim material, or beige to bring back some neutral colors. Men always look charming in navy and neutral colors.
Downtown Urban Style
This is for families who want some spice or edge to their sessions. Dark colors such as black jeans or leggings, blazers, and dark accessories can really make these tell a story, YOUR story. Using buildings as background can really photograph well. Glass windows, brick walls, a stairwell... All show the sleek style you are going for.
Oklahoma Sessions
In Oklahoma there are so many routes you can go with your family session. From fields and trees on either property or local parks, to public areas downtown, your family fits somewhere. Ultimately it's up to you decide how to create the style of memories for this time in your life.
