Why Broken Bow?

It's a question I get asked a lot, and honestly, the answer is multifaceted. As a photographer, I'm always searching for locations that inspire me and allow my clients to feel comfortable and connected. Broken Bow, Oklahoma, offers that in spades.

First, the light is incredible. The way it filters through the towering pines creates a soft, ethereal glow that's perfect for portraits. Second, the landscapes are diverse and breathtaking. From the shores of Broken Bow Lake to the winding trails through the Ouachita National Forest, there's a backdrop for every style and personality.

But beyond the aesthetics, there's a feeling about Broken Bow that I can't quite describe. It's a sense of peace and tranquility that allows people to relax and be themselves. That authenticity shines through in the photos, creating images that are genuine and heartfelt. That's why I love shooting in Broken Bow – it's not just a location, it's an experience. Check out these recent images below of my trip to Broken Bow in Feb 2025. It was a beautiful weekend, and I cannot wait to return to capture more families!

So... I know the question you are wondering- WHERE in Broken Bow? Well, I have created a list that shares the top spots!

  1. Beavers Bend State Park (Of course)! Within the park, you can easily access different environments – dense forest, riverbanks, lake views, and open grassy areas – without traveling far. This means you can get a diverse set of photos in one session, offering different "looks" and moods.
  2. Broken Bow Lake. Sunrises and sunsets over the lake are nothing short of breathtaking. The expansive water surface reflects the changing colors of the sky—fiery oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples—creating a truly magical and warm glow that is incredibly flattering for portraits.
  3. David Boren Hiking Trail. The trail weaves through dense forests of towering pines and various hardwoods. This provides a rich, green backdrop in spring and summer, and an explosion of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows in the fall. The tree canopy creates beautiful, diffused light, especially during midday, which minimizes harsh shadows and creates a flattering light for portraits. Sunlight filtering through the leaves creates magical "fairy light" effects.
  4. Lower Mountain Fork River. Just below the dam. This is its most defining feature. The water, released from deep within Broken Bow Lake, remains consistently cold (even in summer) and exceptionally clear. This clarity makes it incredibly beautiful visually and is key to beautiful, calming pictures. The dam regulates the flow, meaning it generally has a reliable water level, making it suitable for various activities.
  5. Downtown Broken Bow. For those wanting trendy, urban style photos. Downtown Broken Bow, next to Pruitt's Grocery has perfect streets for edgy styled photography. Perfect for seniors or headshots!
